Tracing the origin of the sunset/grid/chrome/neon combination

Hi guys,

After quite a bit of research and some asking around (including this thread in r/outrun) I think I'm (probably) closer to tracing the source of the design elements used in outrun design:

  • Gradient chrome text - probably comes from the 50s-70s chrome car logos, but also the omnipresent chrome robots
  • Perspective grid - movies like Star Wars, Tron, Black Hole and arcade video games
  • 80s Retro sun with stripes and palm trees silhouettes - surf culture of the west coast / California landscape
  • Neon like text - 70s and 80s disco clubs
  • A neon triangle - the triangle symbolizes harmonies of time, mind, body and emotion
  • Old race car (sometimes with light trails) - synthwave is the expression of forever young and rebel spirits

I've just finished writing the article I did about 1980s typography and design and at the end of it there's a whole section about OutRun design. Check out the article for more details and let me know what you think
