Where does the sunset/grid/chrome/neon design combination come from originally?

Hi guys,

I'm writing an article about emblematic design of the 80s and I'm stuck.

Finding a lot of modern retro designs that seem to have common elements. I have read a lot about the Out Run game, the Drive movie, the synthwave trend even about the Kung Fury movie, but it's driving me insane that I can't figure out what was the original design.

To make sure you understand what I'm talking about, here are the elements that I'm talking about:

  1. the sunset background, with palm trees and the grid:

  1. the chrome text and the neon text

  1. sometimes I also find a neon triangle shape pointing down

I know that the chrome text does sort of look like the original Out Run logo and I think the game had palm trees in it, but what about the rest?

The grid maybe comes from Tron?

I appreciate any feedback that could point me in the right direction.

cheers,

John
