Tl, dr: Synthwave is nothing more than 80’s synth pop but produced with modern tech.
Longer explanation: many people consider Synthwave merely a modern EDM/electronic genre that pays tribute to the 80’s, which could seem correct at first sight, but proves just a half truth if you look closer. The songs, even the instrumental ones, are much more structured like pop songs (that is, verse-bridge-chorus) than the freer, looser structures of modern EDM and house music. Even in less rigidly structured songs, you can easily listen Boards of Canada‘s and Kraftwerk‘s and Tangerine Dream’s influences much more than house stuff. Synthwave could sound like house with a 80’s vibe, but in fact it sounds like New Wave but made with current tech and aggregating newer influences, while keeping essentially new wave in the core, thus my conclusion it’s not a tribute (or pastiche), but really a continuation and perhaps even a subset of new wave.
Do you agree?
