[Discussion] Future directions of synthwave/outrun music!

How do you think the genre will evolve, if it is to keep evolving? Or has this “wave” already became a “swash”?

A couple years ago, it seemed (to me) that synthwave was renewing itself by going darker and darker, with subgenres like darksynth coming to the forefront with its industrial and metal influences, with more niche subgenres following suit (horror synth, slasherwave etc).

But I started to notice another edgy, dark genre, heavily influenced by industrial music, that started to appear in the internet corners where synthwave usually was shared and discussed: it’s called electro body synth (ebsm) music and it sounds more contemporary and club friendly that “classic” outrun and/or darksynth music.

But if a subgenre sound more “modern”, it also loses that 80’s feel2. Can they still be part of the synthwave scene without perhaps is core characteristic, that being nostalgia for the pop and club music from 30 years ago? It seems to me that ebsm and some new darksynth stuff don’t blend well.

So I wonder how synthwave can stay relevant and stay synthwave, without being superseded by these new electro genres. Thoughts?

P.S.: shoutout to the mod u/liamemsa for the unban. It’s much appreciated and I promise I’ll behave this time.
